Stacey
L. Venker - Tennis Director
At
the age of 7, Stacey's parents moved across the street from a small
country club with two tennis courts. Stacey was mesmerized by the
people playing tennis and the local pro instructing tennis. She
was the little kid asking if she could help pick up tennis balls.
Stacey started
competing in tennis at the age of 12. As a junior player, she achieved
her highest ranking in the 18 and unders as #1 in the state of New
Jersey. In college, she was fortunate to receive a scholarship to
Clemson University.
In 1987 - immediately
after graduating from UGA in Recreation and Leisure Studies - Stacey
approached the Athens Clarke County department of Leisure services
and the Oconee Parks and Recreation Department and requested from
each the opportunity to develop a tennis program. Young and confident
in her abilities, Stacey planned her first six week program to begin
in the spring, had announcements placed in the departmental brochures
and began leafleting the cities. Tennis for Life was born!
