Bishop Park Tennis Program
Stacey L. Venker started teaching tennis in Athens-Clarke County in March, 1988. She had approached the Department of Leisure Services in November, 1987 and requested the opportunity to develop a tennis program at Bishop Park. Young and confident in her abilities, Stacey planned her first six week program to begin in the spring, had an announcement placed in the one page departmental "brochure", and began leafleting the city. Fifty three students enrolled in the various classes, and her program was launched. Five of those students are still with her, and have been continuously since that first spring.
Stacey's philosophy for the Bishop Park Tennis Program was to develop, organize, instruct and promote recreational tennis programs for all ages and abilities. Today, in addition to the original basic program, TFL, Inc. offers private instruction for both individuals and teams; league, tournament and round robin events for both youths and adults; a specialized peewee program for four and a half to six year olds, as well as specialized senior classes.
In addition, over the past eight years, Stacey has created and developed five different series of copy righted lesson plans with specific progressions for different ages and abilities. These lesson plans have been a key to the success of the tennis program at Bishop Park. They are the insurance that all students are going to receive a fun and educational experience during every lesson.
